Moong dal Salad | Koshambir

Moong dal salad is one of the essentials during festive days in South India. It makes a good snack to binge.

  • 1 cup moong dal
  • 1 teaspoon bengal gram
  • 1 cucumber (long variety)
  • 1 cup fresh coconut
  • salt to taste
  • 1/2 lemon

For the seasoning:

  • 2 teaspoon oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon mustard
  • 1/8 teaspoon asafoetida
  • a few curry leaves
  • 2 green chilly


  1. Soak the moong dal and bengal gram in water for two hours.

  2. Cut the cucumber into small pieces.

  3. Grate the coconut.

  4. Take oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, once it splutters, put asafoetida, green chilly and curry leaves. Keep it aside for later use.

  5. Drain the water from the soaked dal, put it in a colander for sometime.

  6. Put the dal and cucumber in a wide bowl. Add salt to it. Put grated coconut. Add the seasoning and mix well. Moondal Koshambir is ready to serve
