Mambazha Pulissery | Kerala Mango Curry
Written by Jayashree

It’s raining mangoes, the best thing about summer is this fruit. Days would be dreadful thinking only about the heat. Coming to the recipe, I have another mango dish from Kerala cuisine, Mambazha Pulissery, such a delicious curry, we did really relish this one.

Mambazha Pulissery or mango yoghurt curry is a popular dish from the Kerala cuisine. Pulissery is prepared with other veggies too but this one is uber delicious and part of the Sadya that is prepared during Onam.

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon chilly powder
  • salt
  • 1/2 cup fresh grated coconut
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 green chilly
  • 1/2  cup curd
  • 1 tablespoon oil (coconut preferably)
  • 1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida
  • a few curry leaves

Method:

  1. Cut the mango to pieces.
  2. Add a cup of water, salt and chilly powder to it.
  3. Boil it.
  4. Grind coconut, cumin and green chilly  to a fine paste.
  5. Once the mango pieces are tender, put the paste into it.
  6. Let cook for sometime.
  7. Whisk the curd and add it. Do not boil for a long time.
  8. Make seasoning in a small pan. Take oil, add the mustard seeds, as it splutters, put asafoetida, turmeric powder and curry leaves, pour it over the curry.

The season has been fantastic, enjoying all the mango delicacies.  Chutney and pickle are usually found in my kitchen shelves during these months. Time to prepare and store the pickle too, for the year ahead and it did turn out well.

Here are a few ripe mango recipes from the blog.
