Red Onion chutney / how to make onion chutney

 Chutneys are an integral part of cooking in most South Indian families. They make good accompaniments with lunch. They are also needed for breakfast  dishes as idli and dosa.  Red onion chutney is delicious and pairs up well with any kind of dosa. 

Different variety of chutney can be prepared. Mostly coconut, fresh or dried is used. Lentils, vegetable peels along with red or green chilly may be used. It tastes good with Indian flat bread as chapati or jowar roti. It is also served with steaming hot rice along with a dollop of ghee. It is a comfort food for many.

Red onion chutney is hot and spicy. Well, sometimes I do enjoy this fiery taste. Since the onions are pre-cooked, it has a good smell. This is no coconut chutney.

Ingredients:

  • 2 onions
  • 2 green chilly
  • 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek (methi)
  • 1/2 teaspoon chilly powder
  • salt to taste
  • 1 +1 teaspoon oil
  • a pinch of asafoetida
  • 1/2 teaspoon black gram (urad dal)
  • a few curry leaves

Method:

Take oil in a pan and roast the green chilly and methi. Keep it aside.

Add the chopped onions and saute for some time. Let it be translucent in colour.

Once it is cooled, put them in a jar. Add salt and chilly powder to it. Grind all together.  Take oil in a pan, make seasoning and put it. Red onion chutney is ready to serve.

Red onion chutney is a hot and tasty accompaniment with idli and dosa.

Ingredients

  • 2 onions
  • 2 green chilly
  • 1/2 teaspoon methi
  • 1/2 teaspoon chilly powder
  • salt to taste
  • 1+1 teaspoon oil
  • asafoetida a pinch
  • 1/4 teaspoon urad dal
  • a few curry leaves

Instructions

  • Cut the onions into chunks.
  • Take oil in a pan and saute the green chilly and methi seeds. Keep them aside.
  • Now, saute the onions until it is translucent in colour.
  • Let cook. Grind them together along with chilly powder and salt.
  • Take a pan, add oil and put the mustard seeds. As it crackles, put asafoetida, urad dal and curry leaves. Saute for a few seconds and pour it over the prepared chutney. Red onion chutney is ready to serve.

Notes

  • Adjust chilly and chilly powder according to your taste.
  • It tastes good, if it is spicy.
